Chrome or vegetable tanning – which is really better?
In many blogs, online shops, and discussions, you can currently read that vegetable tanning is the only "correct" process, while chrome-tanned leather is often labeled as harmful or inferior. In our view, this is too simplistic. Both tanning processes have their strengths—and both are used in our products. What's important is not just how , but above all where and with what .
Chrome tanning – efficient, versatile and skin-friendly
Chrome tanning is the most widely used process in leather production today. It uses chromium(III) sulfate – a non-hazardous substance that is also found in many everyday products. This process makes leather particularly supple, tear-resistant, heat-resistant, and durable. Ideal for products such as bracelets, bags, shoes, or furniture.
➡️ Important: The negative reputation of chrome tanning mostly stems from countries where chromium(VI) is used – a toxic and now banned substance. Our leather comes exclusively from certified tanneries in Germany, France, and Italy, where chromium(VI) is not used and the highest environmental and occupational safety standards apply.
Vegetable tanning – traditional, natural, full of character
Vegetable tanning uses natural tanning agents such as oak bark, mimosa bark, or chestnut extracts. The process takes significantly longer, but results in leather with a firmer feel, a natural patina, and a particularly authentic look. This is a great option, especially for lovers of classic leather goods.
Here, too, just because something is plant-based doesn't automatically make it better. Vegetable-tanned leather also requires energy, water, and chemicals—although different ones than those used for chrome tanning.
Our conclusion: Both tanning processes have their right to exist
We deliberately use both types of leather because they offer different properties and meet different requirements. We offer both chrome-tanned leather straps and vegetable-tanned versions – all sourced from Europe, transparently traceable, and produced under fair conditions.
Anyone who believes that only vegetable-tanned leather is “good” is ignoring the reality: origin, processing and quality are what matter – not ideology.
