Frequently Asked Questions for Watch Straps
What does 20/16mm mean, for example?
For watch straps, two numbers such as 20/16 stand for the lug width and the clasp width in millimeters :
→ 20mm indicates the lug width , i.e., the width of the strap where it attaches to the watch . Always important!
→ 16mm Specifies the clasp width , i.e., the width of the strap at the point where the pin or folding clasp is attached. Only of limited importance if you want to use your watch's original clasp.
Which leather watch straps are particularly durable and hard-wearing?
In general, all of our leather straps are significantly more durable than those of other manufacturers. Each strap is reinforced with a special Fluco reinforcement on the inside, which stabilizes the leather and protects it from deformation or stretching.
We primarily use full-grain leather , the topmost and most robust layer of the animal hide. This leather is particularly dense, breathable, and develops a refined patina over time. Some models are made of top-grain or split leather —the respective leather type is indicated under each strap.
You can find more details about the differences between the different types of leather in our article “Types of leather at Fluco – full grain, top grain & split leather in comparison”.
In short: Fluco straps are more durable than ordinary leather straps – thanks to high-quality materials and our own reinforcement.
Which leather watch straps go well with classic automatic watches?
The following leather watch straps are particularly suitable for classic automatic watches:
-
Smooth calfskin – a timeless classic: elegant, simple, and comfortable to wear. Ideal for formal and classic watch models.
-
Alligator or crocodile leather – a high-quality, elegant option that underscores the luxurious character of an automatic watch. Perfect for dress watches.
- Vintage leather straps – with a slightly aged look and patina, ideal for watches with a retro or heritage design.
- Nubuck or suede leather – a matte, velvety surface that creates a more modern yet classic look.
-
Brown or black leather: Universal colors like dark brown or black match almost all classic automatic watches.
It's important that the color and finish of the strap match the case color and dial. A simple, high-quality leather strap emphasizes the elegance of the watch and creates a timeless look.
If you like things a little more sporty, the Fluco Hunter Racing with seam and perforation is a good choice – sporty, but still classic.

How can I correctly measure the right size of my watch strap?
How to find the right size for your watch strap
The most important measurement is the lug width – the inside dimension between the lugs of your watch.
Simply measure this dimension with a standard ruler or caliper.
Example:
If you measure 20 mm , you need a bracelet with a 20 mm lug width .
The value 20/16 means:
- 20 mm = lug width (on the watch)
- 16 mm = buckle width (at the end of the strap)
The band therefore narrows from 20 mm to 16 mm.
Length overview (measured without clasp):
- S (women's length): 105 mm + 75 mm
- M (standard men's length): 118 mm + 75 mm
- XL (Extra long): 128 mm + 85 mm – for larger wrists
What is the quick change spring bar?
As the day, so the leather strap for your watch. This allows you to easily switch back and forth between your leather straps without any difficulty and without the need for a spring bar tool. The spring bar can be easily attached and removed from the watch using a slider.
Why is a Fluco leather bracelet one of the most sustainable products?
Our attitude towards leather and sustainability
At Fluco, we take great care to source leather exclusively from accredited European tanneries . These tanneries use only hides that are a byproduct of meat processing . No animal is ever slaughtered specifically for our products.
If humanity were to one day completely abandon meat, we would of course immediately switch to animal-free materials . However, at present, this would make neither ecological nor moral sense, as existing leather is already being disposed of and should be processed sensibly.
In our view, leather is one of the most sustainable materials available – durable, repairable, and completely biodegradable.
We also manufacture in Germany , where strict environmental and occupational health and safety standards apply.
Criticism of leather mostly refers to tanneries in the Far East , where environmental regulations hardly exist.
Our partner companies, however, work according to the highest European environmental standards .
One example is the Perlinger tannery in Furth im Wald, from which we source most of our leather.
There, the process water is completely cleaned in its own sewage treatment plant before being returned to the River Chamb .
The hides also come exclusively from southern Germany – short transport routes, minimal emissions.
Many of our production machines are robust vintage machines that have been running reliably for decades – instead of being replaced regularly.
Our electricity has come from our own photovoltaic system for over 20 years .
The result: Our leather bracelets are durable, resource-saving and manufactured under fair conditions – sustainable and morally sound .
